Dear Parkers and Robersons,
Family History:
In January 2007, Jill Fick (Roberson) was having a hard time getting over a cold, had hard time swallowing and had some swollen Lymph Nodes that were abnormal in size in her neck. Dr. Michael Dudenhoeffer had a chest and neck x-ray taken, and it showed nodules on the Thyroid Gland and some abnormal Lymph Nodes. At that time Dr. Dudenhoeffer wanted her to see an ENT Dr. Robert McDonald in Jefferson City. The ENT Dr. Robert McDonald in Jefferson City did several tests (needle biopsy and blood drawn to check Calcitonin level) results showed Jill had cancer of the Thyroid Gland and abnormal Lymph Nodes.
Now the ENT Dr. Robert McDonald in Jefferson City wanted Jill to see Dr. Robert P. Zitsch ENT M.D. at the University Hosp./ Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, MO, where Dr. Zitsch is a surgeon. Dr. Zitsch ordered more tests (PET Scan, CT Scan, Ultra sound, 24 hour urine test and many blood tests) with these tests Dr. Zitsch told Jill her Thyroid Gland and some Lymph Nodes had to be removed because she had Medullary Thyroid Cancer in them. In the summer of 2007 Jill had a Thyroidectomy and 68 Lymph Nodes removed from her neck and right shoulder area. Therapy for this cancer is to surgically remove the Thyroid and Lymph Nodes, there was no Chemotherapy or Radiation required.
Jill now has to take Thyroid Hormone medicine and Tums for Calcium. At this time she is tired a lot of the time but doing pretty well. In the fall of 2007 Jill under went a Genetic study, she had blood drawn and sent to the Mayo Clinic to check for gene mutations. Mayo Medical Laboratory confirmed she had Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2A (MEN2A), gene mutation which caused her Medullary Thyroid Cancer.
In early November 2007, John and Jim Roberson had the gene mutation blood test taken, Jim did not have the gene mutation but John did.
In December John under went same testing as Jill and was told he had Medullary Thyroid Cancer and needs his Thyroid and some Lymph Nodes removed. John had a Thyroidectomy and numerous Lymph Nodes removed from the neck area. The Pathologic findings where the Lymph Node on right Jugular chain was Metastatic Medullary Carcinoma with a 1 mm in diameter tumor. John has had a second surgery on the right side of the neck and upper shoulder and take more Lymph Nodes out. John’s surgery was a success no more cancer found.
In early winter of 2007, Becky Ousley (Roberson) and Beth Smith (Roberson), John’s daughters had their blood drawn for the gene mutation. Beth did not have the gene mutation but Becky did, Mayo Medical Laboratory confirmed Becky had Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2A (MEN2A).
Becky has now had her surgery and had her Thyroid and Lymph Nodes removed. Becky’s son Landre along with Uncle Kenneth Roberson, John’s son, had their Thyroid removed in middle of March.
Karleigh has had her Thyroidectomy. All are doing well. We have talked with Dr. Moley of Barnes Hospital is St. Louis, he said that Dr. Zitsch is doing every thing he would, so we feel Dr. Zitsch is the doctor for us.

Discussion:
With the information above you can see that the family of Kenneth Wayne Roberson and Alene Louis (Parker) Roberson has a Gene Mutation that all our blood relatives should take serous note of.
The mutation is pasted on from one generation to the next; it will not jump or skip generations it has to have a direct link. So if a parent does not have the Gene Mutation it is over for their family. Dr. Zitsch recommends blood relatives have the test taken to find out if your family is affected with the Gene Mutation. We do not know which side of the family (Parker or Roberson) the mutation belongs to. So the only way to be sure your family does not have the Gene Mutation is to have blood drawn and sent it to the Mayo Lab. This is a very serious cancer causing Gene Mutation please take great thought for you and your family’s health.
Attached you will find the Test results for John Roberson, you would need to have the same test run. The test will be cheaper if you ref: this test result around $500.00 and send it to Mayo Lab, ins. should pay for it. The test is for Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2A (MEN2A), or Sipple syndrome, this is found in your DNA and passed on by a parent. Some things this gene mutation causes are Medullary Thyroid Cancer almost 100 percent of the time, Parathyroid Adenomas 40 percent of the time and Pheochromocytoma 20 percent of the time, the only way to know your family is OK is take the test.
We hope and pray that this will pass over your family, and that you will keep ours in your prayers. We know this is a lot of stuff to consider so if you have any questions please contact the following:
